The Varieties of Instantiation

Abstract Working with the assumption that properties depend for their instantiation on substances, I argue against a unitary analysis of instantiation. On standard view, property is instantiated just in case there substance serves as bearer property. But this view cannot make sense how are mind-dependent minds. consider two classes philosophers often take to be mind-dependent: sensible qualities like color and bodily sensations itches. Given mind never itself literally red or itchy, we explain these matter having mental bearer. Appealing insights from Berkeley, defend which can not virtue bearer—mental material—but rather being object conscious act perception.
